  • An assessment about whether a tool malfunction can introduce an error in the software being developed is made, which results in a Tool Impact (TI) level.

Steps to Qualification

  • The confidence that such a malfunction would be detected by the applied development process is assessed and expressed as a Tool Error Detection (TD) level.

  

  • The tool classification process results in the determination of the required Tool Confidence Level (TCL).

Qualification Method Details

Increased confidence from use
Certification through an “increased confidence from use” claim can be achieved if the software tool has been previously applied for the same purpose, with comparable use cases, in a comparable operating environment, and with similar functional constraints.

Validation of the software tool
Certification by means of “tool validation” can be achieved if there is evidence that the software tool complies with its requirements, that the malfunctions and erroneous outputs of the tool occurring during validation are analyzed, and that the reaction of the software tool to anomalous operating conditions is examined.

Evaluation of the tool development process
Certification by means of “evaluation of the tool development process” can be achieved if the development process applied to the development of the software tool complies with an appropriate standard such as Automotive SPICE or CMMI.

Development in accordance with a safety standard
No safety standard is fully applicable to the development of software tools. Today this qualification method is not applicable to any other compiler.
