The Company

TEMIC, specialist for automotive electronics, focuses on the development and optimization of electronic systems that enhance engine performance, improve safety and make driving more comfortable. Serving major automobile manufacturers, TEMIC development, production and sales activities have a global presence in the strategically important markets of Europe, North America and Asia. The company boasts six business units — powertrain and chassis, body electronics, occupant safety, ABS, sensor systems and automotive electric motors — and currently employs more than 5,800 qualified people worldwide with 3,000 in Germany alone. TEMIC business headquarters are located in Nürnberg, with other German product development and manufacturing sites in Nürnberg, Ingolstadt, Kirchheim/Teck, Friedrichshafen, Berlin and Haldensleben. In 2000 TEMIC achieved sales approaching 1,060M Euro.

The Challenge

TEMIC's Business Unit Powertrain and Chassis (P&C) neededto develop a next-generation engine control unit, complete with much greater functionality. Infineon Technologies' 16-bit C166 processor, the processor driving previous diesel engine-control technology, did not have the resources for the richer features. P&C needed a powerful 32-bit architecture with specific features for automotive as well as a tool suite capable of exploiting the new architecture's strengths.

The Solution

To maximize investment in previous diesel engine control code, P&C decided to follow Infineon Technologies' upward migration path and port its applications to the TC1775, a device in the Infineon Technologies 32-bit TriCore architecture. And, with the TASKING TriCore Tool Suite TEMIC developers were able to take advantage of the TriCore's Peripheral Control Processor (PCP), a parallel processing unit that offloads I/O control, freeing the main processor for other activities.

The Results

The TASKING TriCore Tool Suite saved TEMIC's legacy code applications, while giving TEMIC designers the resources they needed to add next-generation sophistication. Applications were quickly and efficiently integrated into the core development systems and delivered for simulator testing, speeding the design and development process.

The headquarters of TEMIC P&C with business unit management, sales and development, including prototyping, is in Nürnberg, Germany. With further production sites in Hungary, the Philippines and Mexico, P&C is able to meet the needs of international automotive manufacturers that count on TEMIC's commitment to strategically located development and production sites around the world.

Maintenance of Investment and Next-Generation Functionality

Improvements in safety, comfort and environmental compatibility are direct results of the massive impact of electronics on automotive development in recent years. Increased management of diesel fuel injectors, for instance, has optimized the injection and combustion process, leading to improved fuel consumption and emission values. Continuously variable transmissions have increased driving comfort, while at the same time reducing fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions.

To drive these kinds of technological developments to a new level of refinement, TEMIC P&C needed to launch its diesel engine control unit into the next generation with a richer feature set and greater functionality. This leap in engine management and control required a high-performance 32-bit architecture with automotive-targeted features.

As well, P&C needed to find a tool suite that would save TEMIC's significant investment in previous-generation engine-control applications. The new tool suite needed to support the command-line script used by many of TEMIC's proprietary design tools as well as a modular framework so that TEMIC engineers could easily integrate the autocode enforcing company standards.

And, given that the next-generation control units managed a significantly more complex sensor-feedback system, TEMIC P&C needed a tool suite with advanced peripheral control and memory management.

TASKING's Modularity Led to Easy Integration of TEMIC's Tools

By choosing Infineon Technologies' 32-bit TriCore platform, P&C gained the performance it needed to introduce superior engine-control capabilities that permitted even higher injection pressures with more powerful pumps. With these added features, TEMIC combined further fuel savings with even lower emissions, ensuring technology that meets the emission standards of today and tomorrow.

Could Altium meet TEMIC's need for an advanced modular tool suite? You bet. The TASKING TriCore Tool Suite provided an easy port of legacy applications to the new architecture, saving TEMIC many years of investment in proprietary code. And TargetLink, the vendor supporting TEMIC's company-wide autocode standard, had already integrated its tool set with the TASKING TriCore Tool Suite.

The modular framework of the TASKING tool suite enabled TEMIC engineers to easily insert proprietary tools into the tool chain, providing a stable development environment. "Thanks to the TASKING modular tool chain, we were able to hook in our own," noted Bringmann. "The portability of the proprietary tools was so good that we were almost able to achieve a one-for-one migration of the C166 control program on the TriCore platform."

Thanks to Altium's commitment to superior solutions, TEMIC developers had all they needed to make the most of TriCore's peripheral control unit. With this additional processing power, engineers could efficiently monitor the large quantities of sensor feedback needed to gain better-managed fuel injection, camshaft and crankshaft positioning, and engine pressure control.

Altium's Delivery Promises Future Relationships

"Without the TASKING Tool Suite, we could not have made the transition to the new architecture so easily," stated Heiner Zwingel, Base Development. "Much of my work involves creating tools that help others work on their part of the engine control unit. Because we were able to port the C166 projects so easily, we have already transferred the first part, including the tools, to the next group for testing."

And, when developers found that they needed additional features, Altium was there to help. "In configuring the C startup file, we realized that we needed greater flexibility to allocate memory regions," pointed out Bringmann. "We were able to contact Altium's product manager for TriCore directly. He went out of his way to ensure that the memory control we needed was added to the TriCore Tool Suite."

As TEMIC anticipates future generation control, Altium is on the top of the tool suite preference. "I have enjoyed many years of positive experiences working with Altium," testified Bringmann. "This transition from the C166 to the TriCore architectures was so seamless that, as we move to forward and adopt even more advanced architectural platforms, Altium and the architectures it supports stand a much greater chance of winning a future implementation."
